Down to earth frontman for Queen tribute band – November 2008
Meaford Hall hosted rock show on weekend – Posted By SHAWN GIILCK, ENTERPRISE-BULLETIN

For a guy who plays homage to one of the most flamboyant, iconic – and well, Mercurial — performers in rock history, Johnny Zatylny is surprisingly down to earth.

The front man in Another One Bites The Dust — a tribute to Queen — rolled into Meaford Hall Saturday night and left a near-mesmerized audience on its feet and rocking as he had his way with them.
It was a “special experience” for a band that’s played only four shows together, Zatylny said afterwards in an interview. While it wasn’t quite a full house, he and Meaford Hall representatives were laying plans for a repeat performance.

“I really had a good feeling when we rolled in here,” he said. “It was a really good experience– it wasn’t a really big crowd but it was a good show and they had a good time.”

Sans the Freddie Mercury moustache and wearing glasses instead of contact lenses, the Montreal native was barely recognizable. He’s been perfecting his trade for eight years, he explained, but mostly in Europe where there’s a huge and frenzied market for Queen tribute artists.

Zatylny said he basically stumbled into the Mercury business when he auditioned for a spot on a pre-American Idol television show called Your Big Break.

“I got on the show performing as Freddie Mercury,” he explained. “From there I got an invitation to go to Europe performing a Queen act in Germany.”

He had been told years before that he did a decent Mercury imitation, but it wasn’t until he decided at the last moment to audition for the show as the flamboyant Freddie that his future coalesced.

“The producer’s eyes just popped,” Zatylny said.
Interestingly, there’s no equivalent tribute artist in Canada.

Bio:

Johnny Zatylny

Johnny-Zatylny-600-1In the eighties I started my music career with the successful Montreal Band “Simon Says”.
After a break I was featured in 1999 in the show “Your Big Break” produced by NBC, where I performed as Freddie Mercury.
Based on the offer to perform with “MerQury” I went to Germany. I have enjoyed all the big performances with the band, including the newest production “ Queen Klassical”.

In the time between the “MerQury” performances I return back to Montreal to work with an Canadian production called “Queen Flash”.
In 2008 I made another project with the Grammy nominated “Klazz Brothers” and “Cuba Nova”. I also act as a singer and co writer together with the Dresden band “Nash”.
